Timbre Group celebrates turning 5 in the whole month of November 2010 across all three Timbre live music venues by paying homage to the musicians who have graced Timbre’s stages over the past five years.
Beginning with just one live music bar – Timbre @ The Substation – by taking over the space where the defunct Fat Frog (located near the old National Library), the group has grown to a lifestyle holdings company with eight food and beverage concepts and complementary subsidiaries dabbing in concerts and festivals promotion, music education and electronic ticketing services.
It started as a vision that seemed almost non-plausible then by Co-Founders Edward Chia and Danny Loong. Both took the plunge in championing Singapore musicians and creating a home for them at Timbre @ The Substation. Everything else from the menu offerings to the unique location was to complete this personal aim. Edward and Danny started out prudently with both of them rotating service operation roles night after night – this in turn sets the tone of how the group grows organically from one business to another.
A big part to how Timbre has grown is due to the friendship extended by Singapore musicians. Although the group now also hosts international and regional artists at its venues or festivals, Singapore musicians still play the most important role. Nightly programming at Timbre venues continues to feature local musicians, enabling them opportunities to work on their techniques and repertoire as cover artists or perform original works.
So it cannot be a birthday celebration without the musicians who helped Timbre started it all. From 17 to 21 November 2010 at Timbre @ The Substation, Timbre @ The Arts House and Timbre @ Old School, selected Singapore musicians who have played at Timbre in the past will once again take to Timbre stages, accompanied by our current line-up of residents.
Guest musicians line-up includes the reunion of Popland (led by indie veteran Kevin Mathews) who last played in 2002; up and coming artist Awi Rafael; Singapore’s equivalent of Steven Tyler Man Toyak; Acoustic Trip; charismatic singer-songwriter rebel Ngak; ‘it-girl’ of the current music scene Inch Chua; the vivacious Pam & Fatt; Vanessa Fernandez; dynamic duo Jack & Rai; Raw Earth led by Danny Loong himself; Munkee Business; progressive-rock band Zero Sequence; the always innovative B-Quartet and the very danceable Great Spy Experiment and more.

Not to neglect other components which are characteristic of Timbre, a customised SMS dedication service will be launched in November at all Timbre live music bars. A long tradition at Timbre whereby patrons are encouraged to send in their dedications to bands on stage, they now no longer need to scribble down messages or song requests on paper. Patrons now can SMS in their song requests and messages from their mobile phones. Messages are then broadcast onto TV screens located prominently at the venues. So thumbs away!
Just from 15 to 21 November, we are offering Heineken bottles at $5++ only during happy hours of 6pm – 9pm nightly. Cheers!
